Watchfield Primary School Praised for Inclusive Community and Safeguarding in Ofsted Inspection

Watchfield Primary School has been recognised for its inclusive community, strong safeguarding culture and improving outcomes following its recent Ofsted inspection.

The inspection was carried out under Ofsted’s new evaluation framework, which assesses schools across a range of areas rather than using the traditional single overall grade.

Inspectors praised the welcoming environment created for pupils from what they described as a “uniquely diverse and highly mobile community”, noting that pupils feel safe and that they belong.

They judged the school to be at the expected standard in safeguarding, attendance and behaviour, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing.

The report highlights that leaders “understand the school’s context, strengths and areas for development” and have “acted decisively to address the most pressing priorities”, with their actions already “beginning to make a measurable difference.”

Inspectors also praised the welcoming environment created for pupils from what they described as a “uniquely diverse and highly mobile community”, noting that pupils feel safe and that they belong.

The report recognises improvements in writing outcomes at Key Stage 2, alongside stronger attendance and reductions in serious behaviour incidents. Enrichment opportunities including Arts Week, International Week, trips and leadership roles were also highlighted as helping pupils develop confidence and pride in their school community.

Three areas (achievement, curriculum and teaching, and early years provision) were identified as needing further development. Work is already underway to strengthen the teaching of reading and phonics, embed consistent teaching approaches and further develop the early years environment.

Nick Hatcliffe, Head of School at Watchfield Primary School, said:
“We are proud that the inspection recognised the inclusive and welcoming community that makes Watchfield such a special place. Our pupils come from a uniquely diverse and highly mobile community, and it is vital to us that every child feels safe, valued and that they belong.

“The report reflects a school that knows itself well and is committed to continuing its improvement journey. We have already begun implementing the next steps identified by inspectors and remain focused on ensuring every pupil achieves their full potential.”

Richard Evans, CEO of Cambrian Learning Trust, said:
“This report highlights the strong culture of safeguarding, inclusion and care that sits at the heart of Watchfield Primary School. We are pleased that inspectors recognised the decisive actions leaders are taking to drive improvement.

“As a Trust, we will continue to support the school as it builds on these strengths and ensures the best possible outcomes for every child.”
